Adaptive Leadership and Diversity
Heifetz, Grashow, & Linsky argue that "nature acts as a fund manager, diversifying risk" (p. 15). Indeed, nature relies on diversity. Imagine, for instance, if only one species of animals had been able to survive - and if such species did not tolerate or accept any changes to its DNA. Any major disaster that impacted the environmental condition of such species would destroy life on earth.
  1. Nature, therefore, diversifies its "gene pool" in order to ensure that at least some organisms will survive if conditions change. Nature abhors "cloning."
How would you connect this principle to organizational leadership? For instance, consider an organization in which only members with certain personalities are allowed "in." These are people considered to "fit" the organizational culture. Everyone else is kept out or expelled. If environmental conditions change requiring different types of contributions from different types of people, this organization may die.
